Toucheng Township’s Chengxi Community
Touwei, the first area settled by Chinese in the Lanyang Plain, is now modern-day downtown Toucheng. Today the area is split into four urban villages Chengdong, Chengnan, Chengxi, and Chengbei. Chengxi Community is located along the western section of Touwei Street. Heping Street located in the community is also known as Toucheng Old Street. The histories of most of the temples along the street are intertwined with the pioneers who first settled here. The famous Toucheng Ghost Grappling Festival was first held in the plaza of Kaicheng Temple. Originally named Jiuzhengshuxuan, Huanxing Temple helped to spread the phoenix hall culture throughout Taiwan. Through activities and street art installations, the community has linked the various examples of local history and culture dispersed along the old street, which include fortune telling, puppetry, ghost money, and handmade quilt art. Now the community is working towards developing a street corner museum.
